WHY  COSTA RICA?

Canada, The United States and Costa Rica have maintained a tradition of friendship and solidarity throughout their histories.  Costa Rica, where CRINI is based, offers wonderful academic opportinities service learning trips for everyone. Costa Rica is a small country but one with a clear notion of how to live life. Our small country has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and is considered to be one of the happiest countries in the world. We invite you to experience our way of living, learn Spanish, and appreciate the natural wonders and rich traditions that make Costa Rica so special.

THE PROGRAM: BECOMING A GLOBAL CITIZEN

Our programs are open to those of all levels of education; high school, university students and those not currently enrolled in any academic institution. What we offer is the opportunity to connect and engage with diverse groups of people from different cultures, with different lifestyles, but who share the common values and principles of compassion equality, and human rights.

Many people from Canada, the United States and Costa Rica are making efforts to reevaluate their own societies and looking for new ways of understanding. At a more personal level, how to express the values they believe in and how to turn them into productive agendas that make a contribution. We are immersed in a world full of bad news, horrific actions, and a world that transmits a blatant lack of compassion to us on a daily basis. We see wars, poverty, abuses of women, children, wildlife and the environment. It has almost become the “new normal” for many.

By finding a way to add one drop of hope, to work to contribute to the good of others, to be able to share and reflect upon why were are here and what we can give, we can transcend the despair by knowing we are not just part of the problem, but rather we can be a part of some solution, no matter how small, and that we are connected to others who share our core principles. By transcending the ugliness of the world for a time by enjoying gorgeous sunsets, wildlife sanctuaries and communities moving forward with their dreams of a better life, we can find hope for ourselves as well. Moving out of our culture for a time, helps us understand our own society with different eyes and teaches us the value of an international perspective on the world.

We would like you to join us in a big adventure that stretches our capability to grow and give to others through a truly international experience, emphasizing the idea of thinking globally while acting locally, always positing the basic core values of solidarity, respect and social justice.

These programs are based in Costa Rica, a country that has won a Nobel Peace Prize, eliminated its military, and puts a tremendous premium on preserving its environment and wildlife. There is no better place to live and learn.

OBJETIVES OF THE PROGRAM

The main objective of our Costa Rica programs is to have each participant as fully immersed as possible in the culture of the country. This facilitates a truly intercultural perspective, as well as the exciting opportunity for growth in life skills and language proficiency. CRINI is dedicated to making our Costa Rica program the best of its kind currently available to Canadian and US students.

Our programs are comprehensive and include living with Costa Rican host families. This component enriches the total experience by providing opportunities for integration into the community as well as practice in conversational Spanish. All programs include a variety of programmed excursions and activities and, at least three days of community service.

CRINI offers both group and individual internship experiences. We specialize in internships in the areas of social development, marine biology, medicine, alternative medicine, organic agriculture, gender issues, human rights, psychology, education, wild life, agro-forestry, culture and other fields. Our coordinators are experienced, well qualified educational professionals who provide guidance and support throughout each stay.

In order to cover the entire Costa Rican territory, we have four itinerary options, each of which offers unique and different elements. We have offices both in San Jose and in Hermosa Beach, where we are primarily based.
